Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence is defined as any physical abuse, or threat of abuse between intimately involved partners, roommates, or family members. It is also defined as a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation and often includes threats or use of violence by one person that believes they are entitled to control another.
Issues related to domestic violence are affecting individuals in every community, regardless of age, economic status, race, religion, nationality or educational background. It can cross generations and last a lifetime. It is estimated that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, that 85% of domestic violence victims are women, that they are most likely to be victimized by someone they know, and that most cases go unreported to the police.
It's hard to know who is experiencing domestic violence for victims of domestic violence come in all genders, shapes, sizes, colors, economic classes, sexual orientations and personality types.
Some of the warning signs are:
- Injuries and excuses for the injuries
- Frequent absence from work or school
- Extreme low sense of self worth
- Extreme personality shifts when partner is present
- Fear of Conflict
- Passive – Aggressive Behavior
- Self Blame
- Isolation and Control
- Stress Related Problems
